“She said ‘bird!’” says my father. “She did!”

Mother cries and smiles at the same time. Father puts his arm around her.

“And look, balloons!” he says.

“Mimi hung them in the beams,” I tell him.

“How did you get them up there?” Mother asks Mimi.

“I flew! Poof!” says Mimi, grinning.

“Poof!” echo all the Trips together.

Mother walks slowly around the playground, looking at all the new dolls and books.

She looks at Mimi.

“This is magic,” she says. “True magic.”

I see Mimi’s joyful expression at the word “magic” from Mother.

I reach over and tap Mimi’s hand.

“Magic,” my mother says softly, almost in a whisper to herself. But we all hear her.
